Director Vishal Bhardwaj, Kangana Ranaut and the makers of Rangoon had been dragged to the court by Roy Wadia (of Wadia Movietone Pvt. Ltd. production firm), last week. Wadia had filed a commercial suit against the makers claiming that Kangana's character in Rangoon has been heavily drawn from that of Fearless Nadia who played the protagonist in the 1935 film Hunterwali. They had even sought damages from Rangoon makers and had requested the court to put a stay on the release of the film.

The Bombay High Court on February 23, permitted the release of Rangoon for public viewing as per its schedule on Friday. However, the court directed Bhardwaj and the makers to deposit a sum of Rs 2 crore with the HC as a guarantee till the case is finally over. Justice KR Shriram refused to issue a stay on the release of the film and listed the suit for further hearing on the remaining issues, reports the Hindustan Times.

During the previous hearing, Movietone's counsel had put forth the argument that Wadia had discussed a project with UTV based on the biography of Nadia back in the year 2005-06. Apparently the said project was then forwarded to Bhardwaj. He further argued that the project never took off but Bhardwaj seems to have lifted major portions from that script.

Bhardwaj's counsel had rubbished the allegations saying that even if Kangana's character in Rangoon drew inspiration from Fearless Nadia, the allegations of copyright violations still do not hold true as Nadia was a "real person" and a "historical figure" who lived through real events and there can't be any "copyright claims to a historical event or person."
