When he started hosting the very popular music show, Antakshari on Zee TV way back in 1993, hosting wasn’t a very popular concept. But Annu Kapoor made it seem so very easy and did a commendable job for more than a decade. But the man rues at the state of things today. “With so many music and dance reality shows, apart from the various other formats, I don’t think there are hosts any more - they simply look at teleprompters and announce,” he states, adding, “An anchor of a show plays as important a role as the literal meaning of the word, that’s missing.”

While on TV, Annu has kept himself busy with The Golden Era — With Annu Kapoor, his forthcoming film, director Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor looks pretty interesting as well. “I play the infertility specialist, Dr Chaddha, a man who prefers not to think beyond the male and female reproductory system and who believes that everything is ultimately a sperm. He fails to understand why people are embarrassed to talk about infertility issues,” he informs. Of course, there isn’t anything pontificatory about Dr Chaddha. “We were dealing with a socially relevant issue but wanted to keep in mind not to sound preachy. I think the novelty of the content will make the film so endearing and in one of those rare occasion, the script is as powerful as the subject,” quips Annu.

Annu made his debut with Shyam Benegal’s Mandi in 1979 and as an actor, he finds it heartening to see how people are opening up to so-called taboo topics. “Be it homosexuality, sperm donation, artificial insemination — there was no way you could talk about them even a few years back, leave alone make films on them. But it’s wonderful to see that Vicky Donor is a thematically rich story without compromising on the basics of a Hindi film,” he states.

Annu’s presence on the silver screen has been quite rare. Quiz him on the same and he jokes, “I think something’s wrong with my face! Actually, I’ve been quite an ugly duckling in the industry though I have offered my best to all the films I have done.”
