Since its humble beginning in 1929, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, The Oscars (then known as the Academy Awards) has provided viewers  glamour , hearfelt emotion, entertainment and unexpected surprises the way only Hollywood can.

It was 1929, when the Oscars (then known as the Academy Awards) was first held at the  Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. It had a humble start as it was not televised and recipients of the award had already been announced three months earlier. However, on March 19, 1953, the Oscar made its first appearance on TV  and since provided viewers with glamour , heartfelt emotional speeches, entertainment and unexpected surprises the way only Hollywood can.

Even with the anticipation of who is going to win what award, there have been spontaneous surprises.

Now in its 87th year, let's take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in Oscar history and that all important fashion over the years.

 

1. 1973- Sacheen Littlefeather rejects Marlon Brando's Oscar on behalf of him

In 1973, Native American activist Littlefeather represented actor Marlon Brando at the Oscars,  when the actor refused to accept his Academy Award for the film The Godfather, because of Hollywood’s treatment of Native Americans.

Brando wrote a 15-page letter to share his sentiments, but Littlefeather condensed his message in a short speech and decided to read his letter to the press backstage. His move at the Oscars were received with mixed emotions. After the incident, the Oscars since forbid acceptance-by-proxy.


 

2. 1985 - Sally Field's famed speech when she won Best Actress for Places in the Heart 

Actress Sally Field won her first Oscar for her performance in Norma Rae in 1980. However, it was her Oscar speech  for her second win for Place in the Heart , that has become one of the Oscars most famous speeches of all time. As a second time winner, Field was able to absorb the gravity of her achievement and uttered those famous  eight words "“You like me, right now, you like me!”.

Her speech was considered so bad, that it was great and has often been made fun of over the years.


 

3. 2001 - First African American woman and man to win best actress/ best actor in the same year

The Oscars made history when Halle Berry became the first African American to win best actress for Monster's Ball in 2001.

That year was made even more special when actor Denzel Washington became the second African American actor to win best actor for his role in Training Day.

In Berry's acceptance speech, she not only thanked her family for supporting her, but also the talented African American actresses who came before her, allowing her the opportunity to win the prestigious award.


 

4. 2003 - Adrien Brody steals a kiss from Halle Berry

When Adrien Brody won for best actor for The Pianist in 2003he was in disbelief and could not contain his excitement. In an Oscar first, he embraced his moment and decided to give Halle Berry a six-second kiss, after which he jokingly said, "I bet they didn't tell you that was in the gift bag”


 

5. 2009 - Beyonce, Hugh Jackman give performance celebrating the comeback of musicals

Beyonce and host Hugh Jackman (81st Oscars) gave the audience an exciting rendition of various songs including Top Hat, White Tie and Tails, Grease, Chicago and Hairspray.


 

6. The Oscars 2010 - Neil Patrick Harris,  Oscar host this year, performed the opening number featuring the Best Actor and Actress nominees.


 

7. 2010 - Sandra Bullock wins best actress for The Blind Side

The night before the 2010 Oscars, Bullock won the worst-actress prize at the Razzies for All About Steve.​ However, Bullock had the last laugh when she won best actress for The Blind Side the very next day.



 

8. The Oscars 2010 - Host Ellen DeGeneres asks Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg to take her picture with Clint Eastwood during​ the show.


 

9. 2014 - Ellen take star-studded selfie

In an attempt  to take the most re-tweeted photo, second time Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres tried her 2010 Spielberg stunt with Meryl Streep. However, the photo became a group selfie taken by Bradley Cooper with (from left to right) Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o, Angelina Jolie, Peter Nyong'o Jr and Bradley Cooper all coming in to be part of photo. The picture was re-tweeted 3,362,031 times.


 

Oscar Glamour - Stand out moments from the red carpet

Of course the red carpet fashion at the Oscars is just as exciting as what happens inside the event. The stars don't' disappoint  whether it is to shock or wow us whether their dress of choice for the evening. The Oscars is an event that is every designers dream and nightmare.

Even better than the glamorous dresses seen on the red carpet, are the celebrity couples. From Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward to Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, there is that added thrill for audiences watch them step on the red carpet together.
