The Indian soundscape has been about sonic experimentation of late. For Australian singer-composer and DJ, Denny, that makes it a good time to be in the country. Says he, “I am doing more and more work here. Indian labels and artistes have been receptive of my work. It’s a great time to be a part of the scene!” While he has a base here, he travels to Australia and Europe, too.

THE BACKSTORY

I was born in the UK and my family migrated to Australia whilst I was still young, so, I was raised there. I have been active in music professionally for over five years, mainly as a composer and songwriter. I started out writing songs 15-odd years years ago, then developed a passion for DJing and also singing. I became active professionally in DJing eight years ago and have played for many international and Indian artistes such as Guru Randhawa, Jaz Dhami, Dr Zeus and Raftaar.

RELEASES IN THE PAST

My breakthrough song was 2014’s Prehistoric Love with Neda, followed by a Time To Say Goodbye on French artiste Maude’s debut album, Warner. The following year, I wrote No Money by YouTube boy band Cahoots. In 2015 and 2016, I worked with multiple artistes and songwriters — Georgia Ku (Dua Lipa, Skrillex, Martin Garrix), Tim Kellett (Simply Red), Richard Judge (Robin Schulz), Si Hulbert (Ed Sheeran, Jess Glynne) and Starley (Call On Me).

Since 2018, I started travelling to Mumbai to work in Bollywood. I have written songs for and with Jaani, Vayu, Harrdy Sandhu, Aastha Gill, Palak Muchhal and Akasa Singh. At the end of 2018, my composition for Darshan Raval’s Do Din released and reached 50 million views on YouTube. My next international release as a songwriter (under the name Opposite Kids with Rob Agostini) was in January 2019 with Dido (Eminem’s Stan, White Flag and Thank You).

Dido in Give You Up

I wrote Give You Up in 2014 in about six hours with no intention of it ever being sung by Dido. We sent it to our manager in New York who had a direct link with her and sent it to her. She replied straightaway and said she would love to sing it. We had a demo of her recorded version a few months later but it only came out earlier this year. The track inspired her to create a new album, Still on my Mind, and it became the lead single. Dido is a UK icon and has such an amazing voice, the four-year wait was worth it!

UPCOMING PROJECTS

The next song I have composed is Yash Narvekar’s single, which will come out soon. After that, some other non-film songs are in the pipeline. I am finishing up for release later this year. Early 2020 will see some Bollywood songs come out, so it’s a busy time but I’m loving every minute of it and can’t wait for you all to hear the songs. It’s too early to speak about them.
