Gone are the times when Bollywood movies depended on mundane things like storylines and scripts. Here’s a step-by-step guide to promote a Bollywood movie which will ensure that your movie earns Rs 200 crores at the box office*:

*Conditions Apply: Film promotions are subject to market risks. The author takes no responsibility for your film’s failure if you’re unable to incorporate any of the following:

a) A Khan or a Khan-lite (Ranbir, Hrithik, Ranveer, etc.)

b) an item girl

c) a Honey Singh party song

d) high-budget chases/fight sequences (optional).

However, if you’ve somehow managed to get your hand on all the aforementioned ingredients, you’re in for a big treat:

Step 1: Drop one initial hint

The first step is to get your Khan to drop a random hint in a newspaper interview telling people that he’s getting in shape for a new role which will require them to do something he has never done before. Yeah we know newspapers are so 19th Century, but we’ll get to Twitter later.

Step 2: Tease Slowly

The next step is to tease the film slowly, which includes releasing a still poster and a motion poster on YouTube to drum up interest about nine months before the movie’s release date. This should be followed by a second poster, a third poster, a teaser, another teaser, a trailer, dialogue promos, a couple of romantic songs, another trailer and a workout video of the actor in question. In fact, if you play your cards right, you can simply combine all of the aforementioned things as a slideshow and release the movie.

Step 3: Drum up some controversy

Now this part is tricky, you will need to drum up enough controversy but not cause downright outrage. One way to go is to get your star to start a socially-conscious reality show where he cries buckets while feigning social interest and pocketing millions. Or you could have him get into a fight or date his co-star. Other high-risk activities include angering a community who’re always on the lookout for things that hurt religious sentiments. However, make sure the one you anger isn’t too large so that they can get the movie banned or attack multiplexes.

Step 4: Promote on all other channels of media

Now the next step is to exploit every single form of media – mainstream or social – so that every single individual in the country has heard about your movie. For starters, ask your Khan (and other actors who have followers) to share every single thing they do related to the movie. It can be about workouts, shooting schedules, pranks on the set, their bowel movements – it doesn’t matter. Research has shown that no matter what a Khan says is met by delirious applause from one set while another set finds the same behaviour despicable. Depending on the Khan – flamboyant, dumb or pseudo-intellectual – the Tweets should reflect their USP, because you don’t want to alienate their fans. Other smart strategies include ripping off current trends and asking other actors to do things, appearing on reality shows and even gate-crashing soaps. All of these will help increase visibility and imprint your movie into the audience’s psyche!

Step 5: Sit back and count the money

If you’ve read this far, you’ve already done everything required to make a superhit Bollywood movie. Sit back, smell the roses, have a success party, enjoy the money and announce a sequel. Follow the same five steps.
