Tributes to past superstars are regular occurrences in Bollywood films. This time around, Tapaal, a Marathi film, will bring back the magic of the Rajesh Khanna era (the '70s - his glory days - when female fans would throw themselves at his car and kiss it and send him letters written in blood).

In Tapaal, director Laxman Utekar seeks inspiration from the actor's style, be it his mannerisms of dressing style or hairdo. Says Utekar, "In the 70s, Rajesh Khanna was the only star. At that point, people did not have access to TV or the internet and yet, Khanna was known in every small village. Grownups and teens alike tried aping his style."

The Rajesh Khanna angle was weaved in the story by Mangesh Hadawale. For the look, child actor Rohit Utekar sports retro shirts and pants along with a hat in the movie. He uses Khanna's style and mannerisms to impress the girl he has a crush on in the movie, a tribute to the actor, popularly known as the King of Romance.

The director designed Rohit's look with help from costume designer Sanjeev. "The colourful shirt and bell-bottoms are legendary. People from villages who used to work in the Mumbai used to flaunt these clothes when they went home in holidays."

In the movie Rohit, who is isn't very well off, collects blouse pieces given out during weddings and asks the tailor to make him a clothes out of it. "That's the reason his trousers in the picture is of two colours," says Utekar.
