Swedish DJ and record producer Avicii, known for his electronic music, was found dead on Friday in Muscat, Oman, his US publicist said.

Avicii, whose real name is Tim Bergling, was 28.

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii. He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th," publicist Diana Baron said in a statement on Friday.

"The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time," the statement added.

No cause of death was given and Baron said no further statements would be released.

Bergling rose to success with his 2011 hit 'Levels.' He released two albums 'True' (2013) and 'Stories' (2015). In 2016 he announced that he is considering retiring from touring.

"My choices and career have never been driven by material things, although I’m grateful for all the opportunities and comforts my success has availed me. I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist," he wrote to fans.

According to a report in Rolling Stone, he quit the EDM circuit in 2017 following the release of 'Avīci (01)' EP. He cited health problems for cancelling a series of concerts.

"I needed to figure out my life. The whole thing was about success for the sake of success. I wasn't getting any happiness anymore," he had said at the time.

Music industry reacted with shock.

Over the course of his career, Avicii collaborated with artists like Coldplay, Wyclef Jean, Santana, Madonna, Robyn, Major Lazer, Daft Punk, and David Guetta among others.
