How do you interpret style
Individuality is something that is very important for me. So I think every individual should wear his personality. I am a bit moody, so you will see the way I dress changes according to my mood. One day I will feel like wearing formals, and will wear them randomly even if my co-stars are dressed casually. I’m a bit random like that.

Fashion to you is...
Expression. In the sense, you can express if you’re angry, I wear clothes with people’s faces screaming out something or something aggressive. If I’m happy I wear red or white. Colours are choices of my expression.

Your vanity case has …
It has a facewash, Pond’s energy face charger and a moisturiser, that’s it. I think the less the better. At the most, I use multani mitti. I think with Indian skin the less you touch it the better, considering how hot it is.

A grooming/beauty elixir you can’t live without...
My shampoo, because when you’re an actor you end up putting so much product in your hair.

How often do you upgrade your closet?
My closet is a mess right now. I am in the process of building another closet in the house. It’s literally like a junkyard at the moment. So I don’t really upgrade it, I throw things in it. It is bursting, but I think very soon in a few months I will organise it.

Do you go to designer boutiques or shops where you can find off-the-wall pieces?
I think high street fashion is more what I like. And once in a while I go to designer shops. I know my brands decently well. I love shopping at Topman or Bershka, because I love the stuff they have. I like wearing John Varvatos.

Do you follow trends or do you like to break rules?
Break the rules. A little bit. I don’t feel like one season can have just one trend. Each body is different, each person is different so something different will suit each one.

How do you put together an ensemble?
I think colour co-ordination. Some people are against colour and prefer to keep it muted. But I feel at least in a city like Mumbai because of the amount of dust and the skies get really dull, I think it’s nice to have some colour and vibrancy. Something to bring a smile on people’s faces. I love the colour orange. At night, I don’t mind going deeper with colours.

Which city or cities according to you are the fashion capitals of the world and why?
I’ll say London because I’ve spent too much time in that city. The styling, the different types of people you’ll see dressed in different ways over there. They get so many tourists so it’s interesting to look at the fashion choices people make.

Which decade in the fashion history appeals to you the most?
Probably the 60s and 70s. I really liked the way people dressed. Dev Anand for example really dressed well. Whether it was the suits or the fabrics, his hairstyle, he always had a scarf on. He was very fashion forward. I do feel people back then were better dressed then we are today.

One designer label which has been an essential part of your closet over the years and why?
Kunal Rawal is really good. Raghavendra Rathore and Manish Malhotra too are favourites.

Unforgivable fashion faux pas according to you..
Checks over stripes. It just gets too much. Like in terms of cinema, stripes jar on the screen, then checks over that just looks like a lot.

Do you share a penchant for accessories? If yes, which one (watches, belt, shoes, pocket-square, cufflinks)...
I like rings, neckpieces or earrings, once in a while. I love shoes! I have about a 100 pairs of them. Just different colours and styles – brogues to sneakers to flipflops and boots.

Who are your favourite style icons and why do they continue to inspire you?
Dev Anand and James Dean are pretty solid for me. Shah Rukh Khan is also a sharp dresser, his suits are well tailored.

Any style tip you’d like to share for today’s fashion conscious men?
Be yourself! The minute you try to be someone else people can see through it.
