The small screen is getting bigger and bigger by the day.

Filmstars have been descending on TV with alacrity tune into any channel on a weekend and you are likely to catch one of them either hosting or judging a show. Then there are Bollywood A-listers and newcomers making the customary rounds of reality shows to promote their films. Nothing new there, but what makes it newsworthy is that this weekend onwards, besides Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan, who are hosting KBC and Bigg Boss repectively, another big screen actor Anil Kapoor will add to the star quotient with 24.

The clash between stars, which so far was witnessed on the big screen, has now percolated to the small screen with their shows airing around the same time or back-to-back. After Hrs explores...

Anil Kapoor – 24
The desi adaptation of the hit international show 24, Anil Kapoor’s Indian TV debut is highly anticipated. What makes this different from the other starry shows is that Anil is acting in the serial. He plays the role Kiefer Sutherland essayed in the orignal series. As Raj Nayak, CEO, Colors says, “24 takes a gigantic leap from the existing fiction shows on Indian television, with a unique real-time narration format providing suspense, drama and the exhilaration of solving complex cases in 24 hours.”

High on action and thrills, the show to be aired on Friday-Saturday at 10 pm on Colors is skewed toward the male and the youth.

Shailesh Kapoor, CEO, Ormax Media says, “Anil Kapoor’s show is a thriller, and youngsters who are more exposed to international films and shows will appreciate it. Yes, it will be slightly male-skewed, but I expect the audience for it to grow over the next season. Also, Anil’s fan base is in the older audience, who have seen his films in the ’80s and ’90s. They will want to see the show. Unlike other filmstars, Anil is acting in a serial so this will definitely be about his pull.”

Amitabh Bachchan — KBC 7
Amitabh Bachchan and KBC are synonymous with each other. A knowledge-based reality show, it has been a game-changer.

Bachchan made his TV debut with the show a decade ago and has hosted six out of seven seasons so far. His salt-pepper beard, the funky spectacles and the deep, baritone voice have become the identity of the show. Bachchan’s friendliness and humility while interacting with the participants, has undoubtedly widened his already huge fan base. The one-hour show in its seventh season is aired on Friday-Saturday on Sony at 8.30 pm.

According to Kapoor, “KBC is a family show wherein parents encourage their children to watch it. They all watch it like it’s a family film. KBC and Bachchan are inseparable. People know if it’s KBC, it is Bachchan.”

Salman Khan Bigg Boss7
It’s a daily reality show where celebrity contestants are living in a house under camera supervision 24/7. Salman appears only on Saturday and Sunday. Not just the Bigg Boss inmates, even the viewers look forward to keeping their date with the superstar.

Salman flashbacks to the goings-on in the week gone by, gives his take, pulls the leg of the contestants and if need be reprimands them — all in his inimitable irreverent style.

The show is essentially youth-centric but since the last two years, Salman has tried to make it suitable for family viewing, though the jury is still out on that. Kapoor says, “The core audience of Bigg Boss is the youth. However, in the last two seasons they have tried to make it mass-oriented. Earlier there were a lot of edgy elements now it is kind of safe and clean. It is becoming family-inclusive. Of course, Salman who has been hosting it for four seasons has his fan base, which he brings to the show.”
