Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has responded to criticisms regarding his appearance in the latest trailer, saying that fans should get used to the concept of a black stormtrooper.

The British actor sparked an online backlash on Twitter, as fans voiced their concerns about the casting decision, the Independent reported.

The majority of comments opposing Boyega's race appear to have been posted on YouTube rather than Twitter, with one of the comment saying that the black stormtroopers is probally stealing his comrades speeder bikes and shoot his blaster "nigguh-gangster" style.

Boyega's character has also fuelled debate about whether the possibility of a black stormtrooper would be legitimate in the Star Wars sequel, set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, while another article on the issue said that a black stormtrooper could exist because the army is based on clones that were not white.
