Following closely in the footsteps of Cannes and Venice, Toronto will host its international film festival from September 6-16. The festival announced recently that it will host the world premiere of filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children, while Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist will make its North American debut at the event. Besides Mehta and Nair’s films, the festival will also mark the premiere of filmmaker R Balki’s wife, Gauri Shinde’s directorial debut, English Vinglish on September 14.

The latter is the much-awaited film that marks the comeback of the versatile actor Sridevi after more than a decade. A source from the film reveals, “The entire team will be travelling for the premiere including Gauri, Balki, Sridevi, actor Adil Hussain and French actor Mahdi Nebbou, who plays an important part in the film. The teaser where Sridevi is trying to read English with much difficulty has built a lot of curiosity around the film. Moreover the Censor Board was quite happy with the makers as they had gotten her to read the Censor Board certificate in broken English in the promos of the film.”

When contacted, Balki says, “The whole team is thrilled that our film has been chosen in the ‘Galas’ selection for a world premiere at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival. It’s an honour when your film is being showcased alongside films by Billy Bob Thornton, Roger Michell, Robert Redford, Mike Newell, Ben Affleck and Mira Nair.  Gauri and I are personally very excited. And hope the world cheers the comeback of Sridevi —India’s only true pan Indian female superstar.”

The organising committee at TIFF had apparently decided against premiering Indian films after the Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor starrer, Mausam fiasco last year;  the film failed to make it to the premiere as it was not  complete. However, on seeing portions of English Vinglish, they changed their mind and decided to premiere it at the festival.
