With 2005 having been a musical extravaganza of sorts, Mumbai’s musicians do a quick re-cap of the year and tell you what to look forward to in 2006

PAST

What genre of music ruled 2005?
I think hip-hop has had a big influence on Indian music in the past year. Abhishek’s ‘Right here right now’ is a complete hip-hop album. Also Sufi with Paki pop has caught on with bands like Jal and singers like Rahet Fateh Ali Khan becoming really popular. - Sandeep Chowta, composer.

What is the one trend in music that has evolved in 2005?
I think the whole approach to music has changed. It could be amalgamation of music, newer instruments, synthesising music, etc. ‘Kajra re’ had a traditional element to it, yet it surpassed a wide section of audience. Basically we are trying to break stereotypes and formulas to create newer sounds. - Loy Mendonsa, composer.

Which was the most vibrant music video of 2005?
I really can’t think of any non-filmi remixes. What comes to my head is ‘Right here right now’ from ‘BluffMaster’ and the ‘Kajra re remix’ videos. They were very gripping both visually and music wise. -Aqueel, DJ.

Who would you say was the most outstanding voice of 2005?
Sunidhi Chauhan has really made her mark this year with songs like ‘Kaisi paheli’ from ‘Parineeta’ and ‘Deedar de’ from ‘Dus’. Among male artists I think Kunal Ganjawala stood out from the rest. - Sonu Nigam, singer.

FORWARD

One change the music industry is seeking in 2006?
One change that the music industry really needs is minimising item numbers. Today every song is an item number. There is nothing meaningful and beautiful one can hum.- Salim Merchant, composer.

Will remixes be as famous or more famous in the year 2006?
The year ahead is going to be the biggest year for remixes. The first half will see loads of not so great remixes whereas the second half will have remixes like the ones Vishal-Shekhar are into. I think it’s a completely different sound they are exploring. So there will be a mix of both good and bad remixes. -Nikhil Chinapa, DJ.

Who would you say is the most promising talent of  2006?
Abhishek Bachchan will be the next big singing talent according to me in the year 2006. His ‘Right here right now’ is already a big hit and like his father he will also be singing. There’s also Saif Ali Khan who will make it into the music world. I guess I will have to retire (laughs). -Shaan, singer.

Who is the most awaited international artist in the year 2006?
Two of my most favourite artists are Sting and Stevie Wonder. I’m looking forward to their new work in the coming year. -Louiz Banks, jazz
musician.

-Shridevi Keshavan/Divya Unny
