Noted Bengali actor and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee Soumitra Chatterjee's health condition deteriorated on Saturday as he has stopped responding to treatments, an official said.

Dr Arindam Kar, who is leading the team of doctors treating him at a private hospital said that though the 85-year-old actor's organs were responding well, the "platelet count has dropped and the level of urea and sodium in his blood has gone up". Doctors were contemplating taking "some tough calls".

"(Soumitra) Chatterjee's consciousness is little down compared to what it was 72 hours ago. Not very sure which way it is heading. We have received reports of tests and we can deduce that the COVID encephalopathy is progressing," Kar said, Hindustan Times reported.

Encephalopathy is a general term describing a disease that affects the function or structure of the brain.

On October 6, the aging thespian had tested positive for the novel coronavirus following which he was admitted to Kolkata's Belle Vue Nursing Home. The 85-year-old has been under constant observation and is receiving intensive care since then. However, current reports suggest his health conditions have deteriorated considerably.

Earlier, a senior doctor treating Chatterjee, while giving a health update on him had said that Chatterjee was at an 'acute confusional stage' and thus he had been shifted to Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU).

"Mr Chatterjee has been shifted to the ITU after he has been experiencing restlessness and reached an acute confusional stage. We have shifted him to the ITU for close monitoring. He is having several co-morbidities, that’s why we need to be more careful," the doctor told PTI.

His daughter Poulomi Basu had confirmed the news of his hospitalisation with the wire agency saying, "Baba (father) is stable now. He is fully conscious. He is under observation due to his advancing age."
