Her latest number, 'Character dheela' from the upcoming Salman Khan-Asin starrer Ready, has been steadily climbing the charts. And the same was the fate of almost all of of Amrita Kak’s previous numbers.

But, professional singing was never really a career goal for this 28-year-old. It happened by chance while she was still at college in Mumbai. Kak was approached to audition for 'Just chill' in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya. When she went to the studio, her voice made the cut and the song became a chart-topper overnight. “It was after that song that I started my musical training in earnest!” laughs Kak.

In fact, she says, she “was quite shy and laidback till then.” And would have probably remained so had it not been for music directors Sajid-Wajid. “Sajid and Wajid bhai groomed me and helped me open up to opportunities,” she says. It was also time for serious training. Kak found her teacher in Sarfaraz Khan who trained her in voice modulation and classical singing. “He taught me that if I could excel at classical, I could sing anything,” says Kak.

Kak’s next, 'Love me, love me' from Wanted, too rocked. And now, when it comes to singing dance numbers, Kak is up there among other contenders, though she wants to break out of that mould.

“I did do a slow number for Aditya Dutt’s Chai Garam, but the film didn’t hit the screens,” she rues. But she continues to train regularly. “I know, at the moment, my voice has a bit of a husky texture, but I’ll iron that out,” she declares confidently.

Is there any song or voice she thinks is perfect? “I love listening to Begum Akhtar, and Sufi renditions of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. But there isn’t any one particular genre that I feel close to,” she says. And even marriage has not tempered this ambition. “If anything, my family wants me to work on music professionally, not just treat it as a hobby,” says Kak. Her husband Riju Jhunjhunwala is also a fan of 'Just chill' and' Love me, love me.'
