It could not have gotten more Sherlockian than this.
Updated : Jan 11, 2017, 11:48 AM IST
In a social media experiment, BBC One, home of Sherlock, planned an interactive case solving session with writers of the show Steve Moffat and Mark Gatiss taking over the Twitter account of the channel, sending out tweets as Sherlock Holmes.

It took a month for the digital team at BBC Welsh to put this together. The aim was to get people excited before the season finale and involve others who are interested in nothing more than a murder mystery.
On Tuesday, late night by Indian Standard Time, the sleuth took over, or in his words, 'hacked into'' the BBC One Twitter account and the game was on.
He started with insulting BBC One for having poor security measures because breaking in was so very easy.
Too late. I’m already here. I’m bored and angry and I need a distraction. So this is me, Sherlock, taking over the BBC. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/Qo3AVdettJ
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
This is a chance to test your powers of deduction against mine. Entertain me! SH #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
In about half an hour I’ll be bored of you but let’s see who can do this. I’d solved it before I even realised it was a case. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
This definitely got people's attention. But they were in for delightful insults for being boring and obvious.
@gandy_lauren Yes, well observed. Are you going to try and solve the murder or just point out the obvious? #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
After getting into the groove, Sherlock tweeted a video detailing the cold case
Can you work out who killed Daniel Collard? Probably not, but you might as well try. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/AjTh6duAuU
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Pat came another insult flung at BBC...
Either that or you can spend another night watching @BBCiPlayer. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
... and a promise of Sherlock paying attention to you if you get it right.
My next tweet contains the initial notes on the case. First one to tell me the victim’s name gets my attention! #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
The clues included an initial report from Lestrade, a photo of victim's Twitter feed, CCTV image of the victim being dragged by a masked man, an image of his family and staff at the restaurant owned by the victim.
Also, who or what is Fatboy and why is he in a boot? #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/gl0YeLPVcS
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Sherlock was generous enough to provide the fellow sleuths with extracts of Lestrade's interviews regarding the case.
So, a man died. Here are extracts from Lestrade’s interviews with his employees. Could he have been having an affair? #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/t1OLTcEDUw
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Savvy Sherlock took a quick poll,
Do you think Daniel Collard was having an affair? #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
T&C's: https://t.co/MKtjrtfATB.
followed by a beautiful insult,
An evenly split poll. You're half-witted! #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Sensing the delay and already getting impatient with the participating crowd, the detective tweeted,
I’ve narrowed down the suspects for you otherwise we’ll be here all year. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/AuJGeipshu
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
It was time for another poll since they narrowed down the suspects.
So, come on, amuse me, who do you think did it? #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
T&C's: https://t.co/MKtjrtfATB.
By this time, the tweeple were finding the answers to a few questions the case had posed. Good ones too at that. Sherlock wanted them to go further into their mind palace and work out the final solution.
@buttercupfro Go to your mind palace and try and work it out! #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
'Twas time for another clue and to address Lestrade's incompetence.
The police interviewed the brother (Joey) and son (James). Obviously they asked all the wrong questions. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/EWSiloilSB
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Sherlock seemed to have had enough of people just guessing. It was time to call them out.
@Tori626 It could have been anyone! Come on! #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
You’ve got all the information Lestrade gave me before I began my investigation. You want a minute to write things down? #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
The consulting detective was 'amused' by how people were coming to conclusions
@Amberlabamba17 Oh, people amuse me… #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/V3lhKyWzKf
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Sherlock had also taken over the live blog at the BBC. There he revealed that Mrs. Hudson had come to the apartment and helped send out another clue.
Here, take a better look at the new clues -
That photo was taken by a reporter who took a number of photos that night. I’ll even circle the evidence! Now can you see it?! #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/ufWGdGHFFz
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Another insult coming your way.
It seems all murders would remain unsolved if it was left up to you lot. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
People too were getting impatient. The answers were coming in all caps and Sherlock wasn't having any of it.
@moriartyisdun Are you just guessing now? #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Sherlock unveiled another clue. The victim was having an affair and police had interviewed the girlfriend.
So yes, in an unsurprising twist, Daniel was having an affair with one of his waitresses, Michaela. She was interviewed again. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/oSFxgDbhlT
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Someone tweeted an important clue in the case, but Sherlock being Sherlock was pushing them to their limits
@MrsClarabella07 Seriously? #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/m5WS9Bxj2C
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Another clue.
CCTV confirms Michaela is telling the truth. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/Sk5lm37E0y
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Finally, Sherlock got an answer interesting enough to sub-tweet.
Hm. Interesting... #SherlockLive https://t.co/VTiHMUetpJ
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
It was time to make a deduction. So another poll was tweeted,
So can we add a name and a face to our suspects list? Is Michaela in the frame?#SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
T&C's: https://t.co/MKtjrtfATB.
He then tweeted another CCTV footage showing a masked man dragging what appeared to be a large bin bag towards the restaurant freezer.
The CCTV shows the masked man dragging the body in the direction of the fridge, but I visited the restaurant myself… #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/3k8wHsutGG
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Meanwhile, someone dared to make a jibe at Sherlock's tweeting speed. Big mistake, because the reply was just as acerbic.
@lLoveMaryWatson It's an effort to remain awake in your company. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Then Sherlock tweeted a picture of the victim at the crime scene and pointed out that there were two clues in it that stood out.
Two things jumped out at me. One was a small residue of melted plastic by the body. Can you see what the other thing was? #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/Jw9Us5KX8B
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
He helped with four more clues to solve the case. But the help didn't come without acidic remarks about the intelligence of people partaking in solving the case.
If you’re feeling particularly stupid here are four more clues. Extra help anyone? You probably need it! #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/axdxjC28V4
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Fans of the show are well aware of Sherlock's love for dogs and you never tug on the memories of them or Red Beard. Someone dared bring a dog into the conversation and that too in all caps. They were in for a shouty response.
@aqueerappeared THE DOG DID NOTHING - HOW MANY MORE TIMES? #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Another insult.
There's a lot of mental activity going on. Shame it's all mine. #SherlockLive https://t.co/hZGvSvHs0D
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Seemed like Mrs. Hudson was still on the Tweeple's side. She asked Sherlock to help them with another clue.
Mrs Hudson asked me to tweet ANOTHER clue as she’s confused by everything. Ridiculous. Click on this if you REALLY need to. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/24ZrZDpUjW
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Bakers Street Babes, a Sherlock fan site, tried to bring in more people to participate in the quest. But their shout out was met with another zinger.
@BakerStBabes I'm prepared to insult you tomorrow as well. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Ahem...
@AngelBlakeman Pipe down Mycroft! #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Mr. Holmes was obviously getting tired.
Here are Daniel Collard’s final tweets again for those of you with the deductive powers of a mouse. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/uz3DdbksKs
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
I’ve confirmed the tweets were sent from Daniel’s IP address at home on Christmas Day. But Sophie is wearing her wedding ring… #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
One suspect emerged. Well, not quite!
@emgwortho Your mum is also a suspect. Keep your eye on her. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Some people did answer a few questions. So the detective turned them towards the right direction.
So the photo wasn’t taken that day! The tweets were faked, but by who? #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
One more jab as we move on.
@heyits_hannahx Caught red handed. Always a clue. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Then came along someone smart, living up to Sherlock's standards. And they were rewarded with a compliment!
@VickyAnnMoore Oh! That’s nearly very good! #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
By this time, since there had been no sign of John Watson, people started enquiring and Sherlock obliged.
@Archetype_Titan John already knows the solution... although he still seems to be confused. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Then, one suspect was ruled out.
Well done (some of you). Yes, Michaela was at the restaurant on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. She’s not the killer. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/lC0Ph7cr2p
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
And Sherlock was getting impatient. Thankfully there were no more holes put in the wall.
@aliciaroberts_ Yes. I'm bored now. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/YGKuDR4Qy9
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Bored of reading your nonsense now. Tweet a video or pic of you telling me who the killer was. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Sarcasm?
@joshmckenna28 Oh! Actually, that’s very good! Ever thought about becoming a consulting detective? #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
More insults and too much information.
@aliciaroberts_ Alicia, I was born bored. I'm wearing the hat but nothing else. I'm in the bath. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Nobody knew Miss Piggy was a fan of the detective or, for that matter, the show. In their wildest dreams, no one would have thought that Miss Piggy would want to star in the show. But then Sherlock had another answer in mind.
@MissPiggy Kermit says hi. He's at the other end of the bath. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
Finally, Sherlock revealed the answer.
So do you want to know if you were right? This is what happened…. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/C7fHa7zasW
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
He praised one of the participants who had solved the case rather quickly.
@Italiataff Congratulations! You were the least worst. #SherlockLive pic.twitter.com/izUP9qBMQG
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
And left with a parting shot
Well done to those who got it right… in the end. Delete your accounts those who didn’t. I’m going. You’re boring me now. #SherlockLive
— BBC One (@BBCOne) January 10, 2017
