Shashi Kapoor to get Dada Saheb Phalke award for his contribution to Indian cinema

His father Prithvi Raj Kapoor and brother Raj Kapoor were also conferred with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award in the past.

Veteran actor, Shashi Kapoor is all set to be conferred with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award this year. The award is India's highest honour in cinema which the actor will receive for his extra ordinary contribution to Indian cinema. 

Shashi Kapoor, who turned 77 last week, is the 46th actor to receive this award. From the Kapoor khandan, Shashi Kapoor's father, Prithvi Raj Kapoor and brother Raj Kapoor have been honoured with the award too. Shashi Kapoor is the third in his family to receive this award.

The Deewar actor was also honored with Padma Bhushan in 2011, the third highest civilian award by the Government of India.

Shashi Kapoor has worked in 160 movies during his career, including English films. He has also actively acted in and produced many plays for Prithvi Raj theatres.

After performing as child artist in several films like Aag (1948) and Awara (1951), Shashi Kapoor went on to become the most successful actor of his time. During his career in Bollywood, he acted in blockbuster films like Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati (1969), Chor Machaye Shor (1974), Deewar (1975), Kabhie Kabhie (1976), Trishul (1978), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Kalyug (1980) and Namak Halal (1982) .

The award consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs and a shawl, an official announcement said. The award is given on the basis of recommendations of a Committee of eminent persons set up by the Government for this purpose, the statement added. A five member jury unanimously recommended the name of Kapoor, who has carved out an equally successful career in alternative international cinema and theatre, for the award.

He has also acted as a producer in several films. Junoon, released in 1978, got him a Filmfare Best Film award. He has also produced Kalyug and Ajooba which were successful films.
