Shah Rukh Khan's Diwali release Happy New Year has opened to packed houses throughout the country. With both multiplex and single screens working really well on the opening day, HNY was all set to bring home a grand opening day total. And it did! SRK's HNY has beaten Aamir Khan's Dhoom 3 record by miles and has turned out to be the biggest opener in the domestic circuit.

Happy New Year which received negative reviews from critics was touted an entertainer and the family audience seemed to have liked the film. Given the content and presentation of the film, Happy New Year was meant to score huge and it netted around Rs 44.97 crore from the domestic circuit including the Tamil and Telugu dubs. The film performed the best in key areas like Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and West Bengal.

Friday, being a holiday added to the numbers as more and more people flocked to the theatres to catch Farah Khan's magnum opus. Shah Rukh Khan's previous record was with Chennai Express which collected Rs 33.10 crore on its opening day while Aamir Khan's Dhoom 3 had taken over with an opening day collection of over Rs 36 crore. But with first day figures of over Rs 44 crore, Shah Rukh Khan has yet again turned out to be the King at the box office. Saturday too will have a decent show but footfalls are going to increase on Sunday and whether the film betters its opening day collections on Sunday is yet to be seen. But as of now, SRK and Farah definitely have a winner!

Happy New Year starring SRK, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani, Vivaan Shah and Jackie Shroff in lead roles released on Friday.
