Sanjay Dutt and Shekhar Suman are shooting together after 23 years for Bhoomi. The two last worked together in 1994’s Insaaf Apne Lahoo Se. Suman, who is in Agra with Dutt, says he has rediscovered Sanju’s fun side.

‘He’s a prankster’

Explains Shekhar, “Sanju is such a lovable guy! He has a collection of his driver Prasad’s movies which have not seen the light of day. Prasad wants to act, so Sanju gets him to act in a scene for every film that he stars in. The scene is shot, but never retained in the film. Sanju even writes the dialogues and directs these scenes. He has dozens of these films on tape, but nobody sees them. He tells Prasad that the scenes were cut out by the editor.”

Dutt is extremely focused when it comes to acting, says his Bhoomi co-star “Sanju gets so involved in some scenes that he often forgets he is shooting. A couple of days ago, there was a scene in which he had to bang his head on the floor. After the director called ‘cut’, Sanju had a huge bump on his forehead, which he didn’t even notice!”

Then and now

Shekhar says Sanju is the sweetest guy he knows, “He’s the same carefree and friendly guy. While we lost touch over the years, I still kept him in my prayers. I empathise with him because we’ve both suffered. He lost his parents, I lost my elder son Aayush so there’s an emotional connect.”

Catching up

It was an emotional moment when the two met on the set. “There are lots of unsaid things which Sanju understands — that I am there for him genuinely. We have been shooting together for 15 days now and have our meals together. He has told me about his brush with politics with the Samajwadi Party. He tells me that he was surrounded by morons. We had a lot to discuss during the UP elections. Sanju has also told me stories of when he was inside the jail.”

Shekhar concludes, “His life has been on hold for 20 years and yet, he’s not complaining. He has moved on. I am so happy for him today. I hope our friendship continues...”
