After being imprisoned for 137 days at Pune’s Yerawada central prison, incarcerated Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was released from jail on furlough for 14 days on Tuesday morning. It is learnt that clots have formed in his legs, for which he is expected to undergo medical treatment.

Dutt is presently serving a 42-month sentence for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. He had surrendered before a special TADA court in Mumbai in May and was later shifted to a high security cell near Phasi Yard in Yerawada jail to serve the remainder of his term.

As per the prisoners’ manual, a convicted prisoner serving his jail term can avail of two options to seek temporary leave from the jail to visit his home — parole and furlough leave. Parole is granted in cases of emergency, while furlough leave is available as a right to the prisoner once every year for a period of 14 days.

Dutt had an application for furlough before the deputy inspector general (western region), Rajendra Dhamane, in July. The request was sanctioned by Mumbai local police and divisional commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh on Monday, against a security deposit of Rs20,000.

DIG Dhamane said, “He was released on furlough on Tuesday around 9.30am. Apart from Dutt, nine other inmates are also out on furlough.” Dhamane refused to comment on the reason why Dutt had sought leave.

Dutt arrived at his Bandra residence, which was thronged by mediapersons, a few hours after his release. He was welcomed by his sister Priya Dutt. Looking very tired, he told mediapersons that he respected the courts and as a law-abiding citizen, he will follows its orders in letter and spirit. He requested the media to let him spend some time with his family and thanked his fans for their support and prayers. The actor will be back in jail on October 16.
