The much-awaited wedding of Saif Ali Khan and actress Kareena Kapoor finally took place on Tuesday with the Bollywood couple tying the knot in a simple registered marriage ceremony, ending their five-year courtship.

Saif, 42, and Kareena, 32, completed the formalities in the presence of close friends and family at the actor's residence at Fortune Heights in suburban Bandra this afternoon.

"It was a registered marriage with three witnesses — Kareena's father Randhir Kapoor, her mother Babita and Saif's mother Sharmila Tagore," marriage registrar Surekha Ramesh said.

"The notice was submitted on September 12 and they had requested that the registry be held at their residence," she said, adding that they were charged the normal fee of Rs1000.

Though the two pre-wedding functions, one held at Kareena's place and the other at a five-star hotel, were grand affairs with the who's who of B-town attending, the nuptials were kept simple without any frills.

Kareena wore a green salwar-kurta with a heavily embellished red dupatta wrapped around her. She teamed it up with minimal jewelry, red bangles and left her hair loose.

Saif, donning a grey kurta and white pajamas, came out with his beaming bride to greet fans from his balcony around 2pm. They waved and said 'namaste' folding their hands.

Kareena's father Randhir and elder sister Karisma were the first to step out onto the balcony.

The wedding will be followed by receptions in Mumbai and Delhi and a ceremony at Saif's ancestral Pataudi Palace in Haryana.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was among the first actors to congratulate the couple, tweeting, "Happiest marriage bond to my friend Saif and Kareena. May Allah keep your family healthy and happy. Just saw it is registered, sealed and delivered."

Although Saif and Kareena, who have been living together, had maintained silence on their wedding, it was Saif's mother Sharmila who came out with the October wedding date.

Son of late Nawab of Pataudi and former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila, Saif began dating Kareena while working on Tashan in 2007.

Though the film sank without a trace at the box office, the couple's romance soared and began grabbing headlines, forcing Saif to confirm their relationship soon after.

He further cemented his relationship by inking Kareena's name on his left arm in Hindi. They also paired up for Kurbaan in 2009.

The couple had officially declared their intention to tie the knot after the release of their film Agent Vinod in March this year.

Saif has two children — son Ibrahim and daughter Sara — from his previous marriage to actress Amrita Singh. They divorced in 2004. He also dated Italian model Rosa Catalano briefly, while Kareena was in a relationship with actor Shahid Kapoor before they parted ways.

"I hope they stay happy together. I hope Kareena works after marriage also, she is one of the finest actresses," Shahid said congratulating the couple.

Kareena, who is the fourth generation member of the famous Kapoor family, which boasts of names like Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor, is one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood today. She was last seen in Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine, which released in September.

Friends of the couple from B-town took to twitter to congratulate the newly weds.

Tusshar Kapoor tweeted, "All my love and the bestest wishes to my first 'heroine' Kareena on her wedding today to Saif Ali Khan! This one's surely a blockbuster!"

Tusshar had made his acting debut opposite Kareena in Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai.

Amrita Arora, who is a close friend of Kareena, said, "Congrats my darling Beebo n Saifuuu... Love you'll both, and wish you'll the best in life foreverrrrr.. (sic)"

"Massive congrats to Saif & Bebo. Beautiful couple. Wish them all the best as they begin their new journey together," tweeted singer-actress Sophie Choudry.

Designer Manish Malhotra, who has made Kareena's outfits for almost all the ceremonies, tweeted that he was getting the actress dressed as a bride for a function to happen on Tuesday evening.

"So me and my team is here to get Kareena dress as a bride. First we style and fit the vintage traditional outfit on Kareena. After the vows for the wedding party change into outfit made by me," he posted on the micro-blogging.
