Ricky Martin has revealed that it took him years to admit his sexuality because of societal and career pressures, which made him feel 'evil' for being homosexual.

The singer knows that coming out as a "fortunate homosexual man" last year was the end of a long internal conflict that left him feeling ‘evil’ for years.

"I was the sex symbol and I needed to dance and I needed to make girls crazy and I couldn't say that I was gay," the New York Daily News quoted the 39-year-old singer as saying on Tuesday's Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Maintaining his image for the adoring women who flock to his concerts "was a lot of struggle", he said.

"If you add to that... culture, religion, society, what people say. What I was feeling, according to what I had in my mind, was evil," he added.
