When India became a republic on January 26, 1950, it became a sovereign state and conferred upon us the right to live freely. It also blessed the women in our country with powers (as mentioned in the Constitution) to exercise the life of a free and independent person.

As we celebrate this hallmark in Indian history, let us try and recall some of the leading actresses in Bollywood who broke shackles with their respective roles.

Rani Mukherji in Mardaani: She played the role of Shivani Shivaji Roy, a fierce, daring female police officer who was righteous and heroic. The actress won a National Award for her stint in the film. Though the film's theme was rooted in exposing trafficking of female children in India, her power-packed performance also served as an inspiration.

Priyanka Chopra in Fashion: Priyanka Chopra re-invented herself with her powerful performance in Fashion. Her role as 'Meghna Mathur' who succeeds in the career she chose for herself  in spite of all odds was relatable with every woman as . She beautifully essayed the character of a super model's journey to success (Fashion)  which even rewarded her with the National Award in the same yearThis Padma Shri awardee with her decade-long career in Bollywood, serves as a true inspiration.

Vidya Balan in Kahaani: One can't help but remember Vidya Balan in this powerful yet twisted role of an 'expecting' wife in search of her missing husband. What makes this performance particularly outstanding is the perfect mix of joy, fear, anger and revenge she portrays. It's liberating to watch a woman embrace various sides of her personality at one go.

Kangana Ranaut in Queen: Turning the idea of love and marriage on its head, Kangana Ranaut's stint as Rani in Queen struck a chord with women. As Rani, she went from being shy and careful to outspoken and carefree. Most importantly, the film shows her journey to understanding her self-worth.

Anushka Sharma in NH10:  This powerful film from 2015 keeps you on the edge of your seat. It sends such loud messages of 'more power to women' and forces one to take a look at the common misconceptions Indian society still holds. Anushka's performance steals the show.

Apart from these, many other women-centric films like Gulaab Gang, Lajja, Angry Indian Goddesses and more recently Chalk n Duster also engage with the ideas of women and freedom. On this Republic Day, let us also celebrate some of these performances as they fashion the idea of an equal India.
