The portrayal of romance in mushy flicks is not always accurate, however, there are exceptions to that rule. We look at romcoms that can teach you a thing or two, without over exaggerating romantic feelings and emotions. Keeping as real even though its on reel.

My Best Friend's Wedding

The film revolves around Julianne (Julia Roberts) and Michael (Dermot Mulroney)'s friendship and her hilarious attempts at sabotaging his marriage as she believes he is her last chance at finding romance.

Lesson to be learnt People, circumstances and emotions can change over a point in time. Not everyone or everything is going to fall in line with your plans. At times, you have to come to terms with this reality, accept people's decisions even though they may not be what you desire. You cannot force someone to love you, as you have no control over what they may feel, but you can control your own emotions. Letting go may hurt initially, however, it also gives you a chance to start afresh.

Bridget Jones's Diary

Inspired by Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, this flick brings very opposite people together, teaching the main character Bridget life's very important lessons.

Lesson to be learnt As studies have shown, like Bridget, you may have to deal with many toads to find someone who understands and gets you. We all make mistakes, and that's okay. That's what life is supposed to be, as long as you learn something valuable. Also, at times we can be blind or prejudiced about people. Making assumptions based on absolutely nothing. Love can take you by surprise, so don't be hasty to write off someone because of a bad dress sense. There could be more to the person than you think.

PS I Love You

This movie looks at living life after losing someone who is very close to you. Holly's (Hilary Swank) has to grapple with the loss of her husband Gerry (Gerard Butler), who dies of brain tumour. He leaves a trail of letters for her, encouraging her to move on and live life one day at a time. In the process, helping her understand who she really is.

Lesson to be learnt Grief and sorrow can take you to a very lonely place where you shun reality and the ones you love because the pain is just too much to bear. The key is to pick up the pieces and let the ones you love support you as you find the strength to start living again. Time does heal. It can eventually help you move on, provided you let it. While you may never meet or hear from a loved one who has passed away, let his or memory live on by turning a tragedy into something positive in their name.

Blue Valentine

Unlike the usual romcom this film looks at love found and lost taking you back in the past and revealing what has happened in the present. While While it looks like Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) are perfect for each other initially things change after a few years.

Lesson to be learnt While you and your partner complement each other now, things could change over a period of time as both of you grow as individuals. That may effect your relationship. You may either grow together as a couple or grow apart.

Shrek

While this may not be your typical romcom and actually is a animated witty take on classic fairy tales, we can't help but include it in our list because it's as real as it gets. Shrek and Fiona are ogres and not attractive to look at, but they are beautiful people nevertheless.

Lesson to be learnt Don't judge people by their appearances. Play to your strengths and accept your weaknesses. After all the one who accepts you the way you are, is actually the one you should choose to be with the rest of your life.
