Ray Harryhausen, visual effects pioneer who ruled before era of CGI, passes away
The multi-award winning artist worked on some of Hollywood's greatest monster movies like Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Clash of the Titans (1981) and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973).
Legendary Hollywood visual effects pioneer and stop-motion model animator Ray Harryhausen passed away on Wednesday, according to the Internet Movie Database. He was 92 years old.
Harryhausen, who was born in Los Angeles and worked for more than 40 years in the movie industry, died in London, his family said in a statement, Reuters reported.
The multi-award winning artist created monsters for some of Hollywood's films like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Clash of the Titans (1981) and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973).
Influenced by King Kong as a child, his creations would go on to become a major influence on many of the biggest filmmakers of today such as Tim Burton, James Cameron, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.
Long before computer generated imagery (CGI) came to dominate special effects, Harryhausen's creations created awe, shock and terror. Harryhausen helped make some of best known special effects movies of the 1940s and 1950s, including Mighty Joe Young in 1949, One Million Years BC in 1966. Here are some famous scenes from his films.
