He revolutionised Indian cinema four decades ago with Sholay. He forayed into television in the late-1980s and made one of the most popular serials of all-time, Buniyaad that was based on the Partition. Now, filmmaker Ramesh Sippy is all set to embark on a new venture, this time in the field of education with Ramesh Sippy Academy Of Cinema and Entertainment.

Sippy is introducing a graduation programe at Mumbai University in association with Garware Institute in five different streams — BA in Film Art (three years), BSc in Film Technology and Production (three years), BSc in Screenwriting (three years), BSc in Animation (three years) and BSc in VFX (three years). He says, “A career in entertainment was shunned by society for the longest time, but today it’s the most-sought after. It is considered desirable and acceptable, and a degree caps it all. It is the right time and people are pursuing it as there are possibilities in so many fields — short films, documentaries, web series apart from basic filmmaking.”

Ask him how receptive was the Mumbai University to the idea of introducing degree courses in this field, and he says he had a few meetings and sessions with the Vice Chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh and they decided to go ahead. “We are still tweaking the curriculum for the best and will be getting people from the film industry to deliver lectures as they will be the best as they have the experience. We will be appealing to a whole new generation but hopefully we can imbibe them with some old values and classic film patterns as in the West. We will also bring a lot of new stuff and try and bridge those differences for the way ahead,” he elaborates.
