The makers of Rajinikanth's upcoming film have today clarified that their project was not based on the life of Mumbai's underworld don, Haji Masthan.

There were reports that the south superstar would play the role of the gangster, who lived between 1926 and 1994, in his next film with Pa Ranjith.

Sundar Shaekhar, who claims to be the adopted son of Masthan, has also threatened Rajinikanth and asked him not to depict Masthan as a 'smuggler and an underworld don'.

The production house, Wunderbar Films, has released a statement to put an end to speculation.

"In order to respond to the letter sent by Sundar Shekhar Mishra, the adopted son of Haji Masthan to Rajinikanth, we hereby say that the movie does not trace the life history of any individual.

"In particular, the movie is not based on the life of Haji Masthan," the statement read.

The film will mark the reunion of Ranjith and Rajinikanth as they have previously worked together in "Kabali".
