She had the likes of international singer Enrique Iglesias and Holly actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception and The Dark Knight Rises) rooting for her debut single In My City. And now Priyanka Chopra has won a popular award for the Best International Music Debut Award. Priyanka understandably is over the moon.

“It feels like I’m a debutante all over again. I am the first Indian actress to crossover and take an Indian voice on an international platform!” she beams. Will we see her singing in her films too?

“I hope so, but it’s not happening in any of my forthcoming films. It’s a new and organic experience for me. Singing had always been a hobby and now it has become a profession. An opportunity came my way, I took baby steps, trained in it, did a lot of vocals, wrote and made several songs of which a few got selected to be a part of the album,” smiles the actor.

For an actor who was once written off when four out of her six releases flopped in a row, Priyanka has not only proved herself resilient but also reinvented herself. “Here, you are written off even if one film flops and that’s true for every actor. It doesn’t really bother me because I know I have films coming up. The world will come crashing down if suddenly I wasn’t getting any work, or was not doing any films, but one failure doesn’t change my destiny. If I was a terrible actor and people say she can’t act, then I’ll understand,” says Priyanka, who doesn’t have to worry on that account at all having already bagged the National Award for her performance in Fashion.

Incidentally, that film along with Dostana brought the desi girl back into reckoning over a couple of years ago. And her roles in both films were as different as chalk and cheese. “It’s been a conscious decision to select different kinds of roles and films. In fact, from the beginning of my career, I have been trying to push the boundaries. When I played the negative role in Aitraaz, everybody told me you will remain a vamp but it got me huge accolades. When I did Fashion, I was told heroines do female-oriented roles at the end of their career.

In Don, I did action — the kind that no female actor had done before. In Kaminey, I had just eight scenes, but I did it because of the greed to work with Vishal Bharadwaj. Even in my forthcoming films you will see me in different avatars,” elaborates Priyanka who will be seen in Krrish3, Zanjeer remake, Milan Talkies and Gunday. Krrish3, says Priyanka will see her playing an extension of her role in Krrish while Zanjeer remake will have her reprising Jaya Bachchan’s role. “Yes, I play Mala but she will not be a chakku churiwali, it will be a contemporary take,” says the actor.
