Women centric films rarely make box-office history. But in recent times 'Kahaani', 'Queen', and 'Mardaani' have proved that actresses can make films work too. And now Priyanka starrer 'Mary Kom's first day collections have created a record of sorts by becoming the biggest opener. But that is also because it got a wide release. Almost on par with 'Entertainment' and 'Singham Returns'.
With not much of a competition around, given that last week's Emraan Hashmi starrer 'Raja Natwarlal' didn't work it's magic at the BO, Mary Kom's getting a wide release across 3000 screens in India, has cashed in. The film has collected about Rs 7.50 crore on its opening day, which is by far the biggest opening for any film with a female character taking the lead.
'Mary Kom' is another biopic on an Indian athlete- after 'Paan Singh Tomar' and 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' and it is second only to Farhan's epic biopic on Milkha Singh. 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' had raked in around Rs 8.50 crore on its opening day which is only about a crore more than Priyanka's 'Mary Kom'
While mostly films like this would only have to depend on word of mouth, Priyanka Chopra has proved that she can carry the film completely on her shoulders. Her hero in the film is a newcomer. PC's knock-out performance might draw in bigger crowds in the coming days.
