Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hailed the armed forces for their sacrifices and valour as he commemorated India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, resulting in creation of Bangladesh.

"On Vijay Diwas, we remember sacrifices & valour of our Armed Forces who fought courageously in 1971. We are extremely proud of them," Modi tweeted.

Vijay Diwas (Victory Day) is commemorated every year on this day as it marks India's military victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. The end of the war was marked by surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops. Today, Lt Gen (retd) J F R Jacob, who played a key role in the 1971 war, presented his books 'An Odyssey in War & Peace' and 'Surrender at Dacca' to Modi.

"On this historic day, glad to have met Lt. General (Retd.) JFR Jacob, known for his impeccable service to the Army," the Prime Minister posted on Twitter.
