2014 gave us a lot of huge hits making it a hard task to pick the best of the lot. Here is my pick for the best for 2014.

'Stay With Me' by Sam Smith

Sam Smith's soulful voice is perfect for this ballad. The song is inspired by gospel choirs and while the chorus of the song is a tad over sentimental, the song is the best of Smith's album 'In the lonely hour'. The song peaked at number 2 in US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

'Maps' By Maroon 5

Maps is one of the strongest tracks from their album, 'V'. The song starts with simple guitar licks and lifts up high with Adam Levine's vocals. This song seems much influenced by Sting's work. The song sold 1.6 million copies and peaked at number 6 on US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

'All About That Bass' by Meaghan Trainor

Trainor rose to prominence with her debut single. This bubble gum pop song with its catchy melody was certified platinum for five times in a row by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was also the most streamed video on YouTube for the month of September and October. The song is about loving your body and accepting yourself  the way you are. It has been covered by numerous recording artists and bands, including Justin Bieber, Michael Bublé and Emblem3. The song received nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2015 Grammy Awards.

'Steal My Girl' by One Direction

This is not One Direction's best song but this lead single off their album 'Four' promises good things from the band boy ahead. This song is an undeniable an arena-ready '80's adultation. 'Steal My Girl' is the eighth song from the group to reach top 3 in the UK Singles Chart.

'Problem' by Ariana Grande Ft. Iggy Azalea

The problem that other artists may have with this song is that of it being perfect. Ariana and Iggy make a good combo. Grande's heavenly vocals and Iggy's smirking rap slayed the song. Discerning listeners may notice Big Sean's cheeky whispering! The single went platinum four times. The music video won for Best Pop Video at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards and the song itself won Best Song at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards.

'Chandelier' by Sia

While the rest of the album (Laeter) was underwhelming, this song stood out as it looked Sia's own struggle with alcoholism. The song's lyrics and composition are brilliant and has the most epic pop chorus of the year.  'Chandelier' received nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards for Video of the Year and Best Choreography, and ultimately won the latter. The song received massive appreciation from the critics and Sia totally  deserves it.

'Anaconda' by Nicki Minaj

The single made headlines with the release of its controversial video and the way it portrayed women. But we love the music. After pop raps like 'Super Bass', Nicki Minaj is back to her hard rap roots. The music video broke the 24-hour streaming record on Vevo by accumulating 19.6 million views in its first day of release, beating the 19.3 million 24-hour record previously held by Miley Cyrus for the music video of her song, 'Wrecking Ball' in 2013. 'Anaconda' has been nominated for Best Rap Song at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards in 2015.

'Boom Clap' by Charlie XCX

The song is a part of soundtrack album of The Fault In Our Stars. Just like 'Happy' by Pharrel Williams, this is one track that makes you feel so good! Its catchy tunes and infectious beats are simply marvellous. The chorus of the song sticks to the mind of the listeners. The single peaked at number 8 in US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The song was initially offered to singer and actress Hilary Duff for her new album.

'The Heart Wants What It Wants' by Selena Gomez

It is definitely a hit in the US but the song has been most embraced here in India. Selenators (the fans of Selena Gomez) are the reason for the airplay the song is receiving in India. The song connects to the Indian Selena Gomez fans as close as it is to the singer. The song has been praised by the critics for its musical composition and lyrics and seems to have been inspired on her on and off boyfriend Justin Bieber. It peaked at number 3 on the Weekly Top 15 in India.

'Bang Bang' by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj

High profile single alert! The song is extremely addictive song with bouncy beats. 'Bang Bang' is currently nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. This song accounts the third-largest sales debut for a song in 2014.

'Shake It Off' by Taylor Swift

Whether you like her or not, you can't shake her off! With her debut pop album Swift is already among the pop's queen bees and this song tell us exactly why.The song is catchy and can be described as pop-tastic. The lyrics of the song is dedicated to Swift's detractors. The song received a nomination for Favourite Song at the 2015 People's Choice Awards, as well as nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2015 Grammy Awards.
