Having proved their mettle in Bollywood for quite some time, music director duo Salim Sulaiman believes that their “music has timeless quality.”

Famous for giving blockbuster tracks for movies like: Fashion, Chak De India, Qurbaan, Band Baja Baraat, and many more, Salim and Sulaiman  enthralled their fans by crooning to their popular numbers for Royal Stag MTV Unplugged Season 4 in Mumbai recently.

After the programme, the musical duo shared their experience of performing live for an young audience. According to them,  “Performing on stage is a completely different energy.  When you're composing a song, you don't know what's it gonna look like, what's it's gonna feel like, you are not even sure whether the audience is gonna like it or not.  When we go on stage, we deliver what our audiences love, we get hundred times more love in return.”

When asked if they prefer performing or composing music in the serenity of their own studio, Salim replied, “Honestly, both are different. You can't really say which one is better. It's like having two kids. Can you actually pick one? You can't. It's exactly like that. Music in itself is a part of our life. Making music in studio is as special to us as performing live in audience.”

From the heart-wrenching songs to the chirpy foot-thumping numbers, these music maestros have kept up with the taste of Bollywood lovers. Of the innumerable number of tracks, they tell Ye Honsla from Dor is their most favourite composition till date.

These days every music director is normally looking to compose an ear worm, a catchy hook that propels the song and the movie in which it is featured far and wide. But Salim-Sulaiman is unwilling to join that rat race. For them composing good music is the most important thing. According to Salim , “Bollywood is a mix of all genres of music, it has Rock, Sufi, Hip Hop, EDM. When me an Sulaiman make music, we concentrate on making a good song, rather than a hit song. We try to make a timeless song.”

The duo was in news recently for composing a song Chulein Aasmann for the social campaign #ReachForTheSky along with Men Against Rape and Discrimination (MARD), founded by Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar. The campaign, launched by Google, aims at improving Internet literacy for women.

About the initiative, the duo feels: “It's a noble idea to get women online. Not just to bring them online, but to make them become entrepreneurs by themselves. Ladies who don't have infrastructure for their own business, Online is such a comfortable market, you can do it at your own pace.”

Well said, Salim-Sulaiman and more power to them for a musical future.
