Reaping rich dividends

This year, the decision to focus on quality is reaping rich dividends for the actor. “The general advice is to do as many films as possible, because you never know what works. But I’ve only had one really big flop in my career — Bombay Velvet,” she says. Anushka co-founded production house Clean Slate Films in 2014, with her brother Karnesh Sharma, and acted in and co-produced the sleeper hit NH10.

Looking ahead

Next year, she’s working on home production Phillauri, releasing in March, which also stars Diljit Dosanjh and Suraj Sharma, Imtiaz Ali’s The Ring, opposite Shah Rukh Khan, and has a guest appearance in Raju Hirani’s biopic on Sanjay Dutt. Another Clean Slate production, Kaneda, to be directed by NH10’s Navdeep Singh, also goes on the floor in 2017. “Things are happening very quickly for us. We’re developing film scripts… Backing new talent.”

She holds the creative reins at Clean Slate, and is excited about the possibilities for the fledgling production house. “There’s no pressure on us, no preconceived notions about the kind of films we should make.” Absence of legacy is a distinct advantage, she believes.

Media madness

These days Anushka is binge-watching Black Mirror, the acclaimed Netflix show that explores the dark side of technology and the internet. Having been at the receiving end of vicious social media trolling, she knows what it’s like to face a virtual lynch mob. “On Twitter, people say things because they want to belong. We all feel insecure, but how you deal with it defines who you are, as well as the quality of your life.”
