Kangana Ranaut’s sister Rangoli, an acid attack victim, is pleased to hear that Indian government has added acid in the poison category and now it will not be sold to anyone unless the buyer shows his/her ID and residence proof. The number of shops to sell acid will also be kept incheck. The move comes in response to the rising number of acid attacks on women. Seven years ago, Rangoli, a final year student of MSc microbiology, had acid flung on her by an unknown person. There was speculation that the attack was a result of unrequited love. Rangoli recalls her experience. Read on for her story in her own words...

“The traumatic incident happened to me when I was 23. I view it as a freak accident. You cannot control these things, and at the same time, you do not need to live in fear. And to be honest, now I don’t even remember the details of that day or time, and have consciously moved on into a better space.

I have always been a strong person mentally. Even when I was in hospital recovering from the attack, I never cried because I knew everything would be okay. I had immense faith. Though it took me over a year to recover completely.

Emotional recovery was a greater challenge than the physical one. The incident rewarded me in terms of the positivity and peace I feel today.

Whatever happened to me was because of someone’s criminal mind. I think he had some psychological issues as well. I never understood why anybody would even think about doing something so horrible to anotherperson. My biggest support system during this time was Kangana. Though she seems small and fragile you don’t feel like that when she is around, because she takes care of her family and friends selflessly.

She never allowed me to feel depressed even for a minute! Positive thinking is very important. Your mental state affects your physical recovery dramatically. But postivity sometimes needs to be induced through support from people who love you. And Kangana, was like a rock next to me.

Today I have managed to forget the horrific incident and move on with your life completely. I’m much happier now. My biggest strength in life is my family and I am fine today because of them. Of course, the one thing that I have learned from that experience is awareness. I learnt to move on with Ajay’s (husband) and my family’s support. I recovered physically with the help of Dr Anil Tibrewala. I want to thank him from the bottom of my heart.

Recently, a girl from Delhi also suffered an acid attack at Bandra station. The government should take preventive measures. Acid should be banned and thereshould be stricter rules against criminals. We should have fast-track courts for such cases. Selective sale  of acid can prevent such attacks as right now it’s easily accessible so such cases are happening frequently.
