This week model Chrissy Teigen became the most potent ambassador for the #freethenipple campaign. She recently shared a picture from a shoot for W Magazine on her Instagram account, but since it violated the app’s ban on female nipples, it was removed.

Last year, the co-founder of the social media app defended its rules on nudity following a nipple ban protest that saw actress Scout Willis strut around New York City topless after being banned from the site. The CEO of the social network stated, “You may not post violent, nude, partially nude… pornographic or sexually suggestive photos.”
The daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, was removed from Instagram for posting a photograph of a sweatshirt she designed featuring two topless women.
Grace Coddington, US Vogue creative director and former model, was temporarily banned from Instagram after posting a topless line-drawn cartoon of herself reclining in a chair.
Rihanna, who had 1.3 million followers before shutting her Instagram account down, also tweeted her support for the campaign.
With the likes of Chrissy Teigen waging a war against the social media app’s nipple ban, let’s see what our style purveyors think about it...

As modern as I am, I completely agree with the ban, especially from a child’s or a teenager’s point of view. Instagram is now being used by five-year-olds. Tits are a symbol of sexuality. They arouse you — they’ll also arouse a five-year-child and a 60-year-old. On Instagram, you are inviting sexual thoughts in small children. An adult can go to a porn site and see it. I’m in favour of the ban.

I think as long as it is not offensive, there should be no objection because we have far more explicit stuff freely on display so it is just giving too much importance to a non-issue and ban far more damaging things.

As an artist, I find the fuss over nipples quite silly and even if I was not, I would never be in favour of banning things. But self-regulation is an important part of this debate. It’s such a fine line between art and pornography. And in the midst of people crossing the line of decency to grab eyeballs, this regulation is bound to happen. I can see why the ban is in place. If we were more responsible, maybe things would be different!

I do not appreciate extremely naked or provocative pics on social media. However, I feel a ban of this type is of no use. If not on Instagram, people will post it on any other social media. How many social portals can be controlled? Either have a universal ban on all media applicable to all apps, or else just let it be. What about Dan Bilzerian’s (American professional poker player and actor) account then? If these kind of accounts can be on Instagram, I’m sure any kind of nipple show shouldn’t be a problem!

The nipple ban is justified. Considering it’s a social media platform and there are innumerable people from different walks and fields who are a part of it. A certain amount of filtering when it comes to uploading content is required because each post may get a different reaction from various sections of society. It can influence people the wrong way.

No, I don’t see any reason why the nipple ban makes any sense. It is a free world and everyone has the freedom to do what they like.
