The National Film Development Corporation of India has announced a host of projects for its annual co-production market, the Film Bazaar, to be held in Goa next month, alongside the Film Festival of India. Mira Nair's upcoming production, Rajat Kapoor's next, Shiladitya Bora's Sri Lanka-based political thriller and Sabiha Sumar's next are among the 32 films that will be a part of the Film Bazaar.

In its eighth year, the Film Bazaar is a platform for filmmakers to exhibit their projects to international film-makers, producers and film festival directors. Of the 32 films, 18 are from India and 14 from overseas. While 26 of these film projects are from the co-production market, six are from the Screenwriters Lab, which was held earlier this year.

The NFDC has been churning out some of the most creative home-grown talents in recent times. The Film Bazaar, a platform initiated by the film body to help aspiring filmmakers find producers, editors or reach out to festivals across the world, will also have market screenings and submission viewings. "We try and ensure that the quality of film-making benefits from the labs, and that South Asian film-makers have access to producers and technicians from different parts of the world," said an NFDC spokesperson.

Projects include Three and a Half to be produced by Mira Nair and directed by long-time collaborator Sooni Taraporewala, Amitav Kaul's adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's Pulitzer-winning book Interpreter of Maladies, Aamir Bashir's Winter, Jamie Mateus-Tique's Goa, Iram Haq's What Will People Say (Norway) and director Ashim Ahluwalia's The Boyfriend.

Shiladitya Bora, who heads PVR Director's Rare, and and whose last film was X The Film with film critics Raja Sen and Sudhish Kamath, will collaborate with filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage to produce a political thriller. The movie will be based on the personal narrative of a Liberation Tiger of Tamil Elam (LTTE) functionary who was also an avid film buff and Sivaji Ganeshan fan. "I had been greatly inspired by films like Salvador and The Last King of Scotland and always wanted to make a movie on the same lines. And when Prasanna and I chanced upon this story, we decided to go ahead with it immediately," said Bora. The film will be shot on location in Sri Lanka's Northern Province, Jaffna, former LTTE capital Killinochi and Colombo. It will go on floors next month.

Amitav Kaul has developed the nine stories of Interpreter of Maladies into a trilogy, the first of which is under production. "We have lined up an incredibly creative team. All of them have made several movies and many have been nominated and have won the Oscar," said Kaul.

Sabiha Sumar, whose last film Khamosh Pani was critically-acclaimed, will make The Judgement, a story of a Pakistani girl from a conservative, elite family fighting to pursue her dreams. Rajat Kapoor's Mantra will be about the politics of the global-local divide of a society in flux.
