A new Alien movie is on the way and will be helmed by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. Ridley Scott is on board as the producer of the film, reported Variety. "So I think this is officially my next film," Blomkamp wrote on Instagram.

Blomkamp revealed last month that he has been working on his own take on the sci-fi series, which is reportedly set after the events of Fox's Prometheus sequel with Scott.

There were suggestions that the new Alien movie was to be abandoned, until Blomkamp's latest Instagram post. Sigourney Weaver also recently admitted that she would be interested in reprising her Alien role if Blomkamp's project went ahead, but it is as yet unclear whether Weaver is officially involved.

Weaver starred in four Alien films between 1979 and 1997, while Scott returned to the franchise in 2012 with Prometheus. The actress will next star in Blomkamp's Chappie, about a stolen police droid who is given the ability to think for himself. It will be released on March 6.

Blomkamp's last movie, the Matt Damon-starring Elysium, was released in 2013.
