It’s not going to be smooth sailing for Vidya Balan’s Begum Jaan. The cast and crew of the Hindi remake of the Bengali film Rajkahini, directed by Srijit Mukerji, was to begin shooting in Jharkhand this week, but now the cyclonic weather has put a dampener on their plans. The actress has been asked to stay put in Mumbai till June-end when shooting will begin.

Earlier too, Begum Jaan had run into trouble. They were to start shooting when several department heads — cinematographer Ravi Chandran, costume designer Payal Saluja and production designers Amit Ray and Subrata Chakraborty — walked out for financial reasons. Also, the location was changed from Punjab, to Hyderabad, to Rajasthan and finally Jamshedpur and Ranchi in Jharkhand. While the crew landed in Jharkhand, Vidya and some of the cast were to join them this week when the news of the cyclonic weather reached them. The actress had to put her travel plans on hold once again. Vidya will now start shooting by June end as the sets will be ready by then.

Producer Mukesh Bhatt, however, denies there has been any change of plans or delay in shooting, “It’s nothing like that. Yes, there was a cyclone in Jharkhand and there was some damage to the sets we had constructed which we are re-building again. They will be put up overnight. But we were always starting the shoot in June. It was to begin on June 11 but now because of the cyclone, we are starting on June 13. Vidya will join us then.”

About Rajkahini

Rajkahini is a period drama based during the time when India got independence from British rule in 1947. It is centred around 11 female characters led by brothel owner Begum Jaan, who puts up a fight with the women in the brothel when they are asked to relocate because the boundary line dividing East Pakistan and India has been drawn right through the middle of the brothel.
