In its tenth year now, Movember (moustache + November) will see millions of men all over the world grow their moustache and come together to increase awareness and raise funds for prostate and testicular cancer. It also works towards combatting mental health issues among men. Started in Australia by three friends, the charity movement last year had over three million participants across 21 countries.
A moustache has long been associated with intelligence, wit, social status and some even claim it’s a woman magnet. Stars like Tom Selleck, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt in Hollywood have carried off the facial hair with ease. Closer home, it’s Ranveer Singh, Aamir Khan and Anil Kapoor, who’ve done it justice. Either way growing a moustache requires proper maintenance and careful trimming.
Create a distinct identity
Asif Mohammad, top stylist, Jean-Claude Biguine Salon & Spa, India says moustaches much like hairstyles, have represented an aesthetic sense of every era. Today, they are a symbol of individuality and freedom. “For first timers, it is ideal to start with a medium to short-length moustache. Once you are comfortable with it, you can then experiment with different styles. The younger generation is increasingly growing moustaches to look trendy and stylish, but are simultaneously wanting to express a distinct style and identity for themselves,” he says adding, “Make sure you trim your moustache regularly to keep the length and style in check. Apply a moisturiser on the skin under your facial hair to avoid getting dry and itchy skin. For styling, comb it over and use some wax or matte styling product to fix it in place. Most importantly, take professional help from your grooming expert, if you want to grow and maintain it more permanently.”
Hair growth matters
There is something masculine and rebellious associated with moustaches and beards says Natasha Naegamvala director, Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin Salon. “Before starting, remember not all men can have a full, thick, broad moustache. Some would need to sport a thin moustache like pencil-style, some going into French, some more regal curling up and out. Combing and cutting it properly as well as constant grooming so that it stays in shape is essential. I think Ajay Devgn carries off a moustache perfectly well,” she adds.
Get the right tools
Dr Apoorva Shah, leading trichologist and founder of Richfeel Health and Beauty Pvt Ltd believes one should start with a free style moustache as one may not know the density and rate of growth to style it in a particular fashion. “The metrosexual look is in vogue these days and men do prefer a clean shaven look. However, for those taking part in Movember, keeping it clean and maintaining hygiene is basic. If one keeps a long moustache and styles it using pomades and wax then it needs thorough shampooing regularly. If need be ,one can also colour the hair using ammonia-free colour,” he says.
