A lot has been said about the casting of black actor Noma Dumezweni as Hermoine in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. JK Rowling hit out at the racists who felt Hermoine should be a white woman. She was quoted saying: "With my experience of social media, I thought that idiots were going to idiot," Rowling told The Observer. "But what can you say? That's the way the world is. Noma was chosen because she was the best actress for the job." "I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione 'turned white' - that is, lost colour from her face after a shock - that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with. But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm."
However, Twitter user and author Sunny Singh had a different take on the entire controversy. Singh is an author who was born in Varnasi and spent time Islamabad and New York. She wrote the real problem was Rowling retro-fitting characters.
She tweeted: “Rowling tells of anger at attacks on casting of black Hermoine. glad Noma is playing her but JK's reasoning...sigh. It isn't that a nonwhite actress can't play Hermione. God knows Noma is AMAZING. My problem is w/Rowling politically retro-fitting her books. So Dumbledore 'becomes' gay? Hermione 'could' be black? Why not WRITE the characters as queer and PoC to start with? With all complexity? In the books (and movies) the actual PoC characters (esp WoC) are stereotyped and marginalised right through +heteronormativity is pushed. I get it.”
She added: “She is a classic British 'liberal' with good intentions but many blind spots on class, race, sexuality. Why not work on learning? And why not then write a new series of books that address - fully - the issues around representations? All of grow so why try to retrofit? PS don't come screaming at me. I like the HP books. Even use them for teaching (plot and pacing, not characterisation though).”

Oh and don't get me started on class. Everyone goes to same school and marries eachother, has kids who go to the SAME school. And on and on

Remember this? Yes, that's Casual Vacancy at BBC. Kind of looks like HP retirement home, no? pic.twitter.com/Zf8xuxzvW1

Her Cormoran Strike novels aren't exactly 'inclusive' either. And they don't have to be (writer's prerogative) but oh the handwringing

PS, and don't even get me started on Lula. Just don't. Had me wanting to throw and break things while I was reading that book
