Udyan Sagar, better known as Nucleya, is amped up about his new record Tota Myna, for which he has been touring. After releasing five tracks, the album has a few more to go and the music producer has called them love songs for 2018. However, he is quick to add that he doesn’t accord themes to his albums. “I approach each song differently. If I work on a movie, there’s a script to follow. But here, I’m the boss and I don’t need to bother about anything,” he laughs.

FEARLESS COLLABORATORS

According to the DJ and music producer, every number on the album will give people a different set of feelings, like watching a film. “But a large portion of this script is emotional, which is why it’s called Tota Myna. That’s what my mother used to call my wife Smriti (Choudhary) and me when we started dating. The happiest moments of my life have been from the time I met her,” says he. So far, Nucleya has dropped Mirza (feat. Raftaar and Rashmeet Kaur), Lori (feat. Vibha Saraf), Mahiya (feat. Rashmeet and Whales), Out Of Your Mind (feat. Shruti Haasan) and Going to America (feat. Anirudh Ravichander and Anthony Daasan). About his collaborators, he says, “Everyone I’ve worked with is fearless. They don’t care about what’s going to happen next in their creative life. They just want to push the boundaries and explore.”

NO PRESSURE TO PERFORM

Nucleya’s earlier albums — Bass Rani and Bass Raja — became quite popular but when it comes to subsequent works, he doesn’t feel pressured to repeat the success. “It may come across as a negative thing but I am selfish as a musician. I make music for myself and no one else. My songs don’t have a formula for mainstream success because there’s no format to them,” the musician states. “Songs in top 10 spots on the radio have the chorus or the main part coming in within 15 seconds and are simplified so that people can understand them. But my tracks have long intros and at times they are just bizarre dialogues. My music is destined to fail but it surprisingly ends up working in my favour,” he explains, adding that his compositions grab listeners’ attention because they want to know what will come next. This gives the Scene Kya Hai hitmaker liberty to explore and take his creativity into the direction he wishes.

CONTROL ON CREATIVITY

“I’d be lying if I said that I’m not concerned about whether the audience would like my songs or not,” Nucleya continues, “I just don’t let it bother me too much because I only have control over making music with complete honesty and not how it will be received.” He points out that his true fans will always know what he’s trying to do. Listeners have hailed Nucleya’s music because it’s multi-genre and experimental. But, one thing that's consistent is his signature sound that makes it easily identifiable. “That’s more rewarding than categorising my music. I put myself into music so it’s easy to see me in my tracks,” says the artiste, who has a number of film projects lined up in the coming months.
