Veteran rocker Tom Petty has passed after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 66.

Petty's longtime manager confirmed the singer's death and said that the the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer took his last breath at his home in Malibu, reported People magazine.

But earlier in the night, the reports about his death caused quite a confusion among fans.

CBS News, citing Los Angeles Police Department, had earlier reported that Petty, 66, had died. The LAPD later said on Twitter that it has "no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources."

Celebrity website TMZ.com, citing unidentified sources, reported later that Petty was not expected to live much longer but was "still clinging to life."

TMZ.com said earlier that Petty was rushed to hospital on Sunday night after being found unconscious, not breathing and in cardiac arrest. The website said he had been placed on life support, and that his family has a do not resuscitate order.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said it had responded to a call in Malibu on Sunday and had transported a male to the hospital.

The rocker's daughter, artist Annakim Violette Petty, had flatly denied he was dead and lashed out at Rolling Stone magazine.

"How dare you report that my father has died just to get press because your articles and photos are so dated?" she wrote in a profanity-laden Instagram post along with an image of Tom Petty on a 1979 cover.

Musicians and Hollywood stars expressed shock and grief over the news, paying tribute to the rock legend on social media.
