Mumbai police today said they had sought an opinion from the Law and Judiciary department of the Maharashtra government as to whether an offence can be registered against the renowned actor Om Puri over his remarks regarding the soldiers.

"We have forwarded the written application (submitted by an NGO, seeking action against Puri) for legal opinion," said Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order).

Puri's recent remarks about the martyred soldiers during a TV debate on ban on Pakistan actors by the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association had kicked off a controversy. Puri had said "who asked the soldiers to join the Army". He later apologised for the remarks.

A local NGO has submitted a written complaint to the suburban Andheri police seeking a First Information Report (FIR) against Puri.
