The first long weekend of this year, the Republic Day weekend had two releases: The Akshay Kumar-starrer Baby and Sonam Kapoor's Dolly Ki Doli. Belonging to completely different genres, Baby that had Akshay teaming up with his Special 26 director Neeraj Pandey was a taut, thrilling drama, Dolly Ki Doli was a light-hearted film about a con bride. The Akshay Kumar starrer won rave reviews and despite a slow start at the box-office has gone on to do a business of Rs 50 crores plus while Sonam Kapoor's's fake bride act has garnered Rs 15 crores plus.

This week will again see two big films, the erotic thriller Khamoshiyan and a bio-pic Hawaizaada clashing at the box-office along with a murder-mystery Rahasya. We give you a lowdown on the three films:

Hawaizaada: Based on the life of scientist Shivkar Bapuji Talpade who is said to have constructed India's first unmanned plane, the film has a lot riding on it. Ayushmann Khurrana, who plays the lead role, is in badly need of a hit. The actor who made his debut with the critically acclaimed hit Vicky Donor hasn't had a success for a long time. His last outing Bewakoofiyan was a dud. Then there's Pallavi Sharda, the girl who made her debut in the dismal film Besharam. It's her second outing and an acid test. She plays Ayushmann's love interest in the film. Mithun Chakraborty plays pivotal role and from what we saw in the promos, is likely to be the scene-stealer.

Though based on the Indian scientist, not much is known about him, and the film aims to present an inspiring story. However, barring a couple of songs like Daat ticket that has been on high-rotation, the music hasn't struck a chord. Neither has the film made the right noises. Now, whether it was deliberate or overlooked, the film's marketing was completely laidback. Now, it depends completely on Ayushmann and the script to do the magic.

Khamoshiyan: Comprising a bunch of debutantes, TV actor Gurmeet Choudhary, Sapna Pabbi, and director Karan Darra along with the relatively new Ali Fazal, Khamoshiyan is the latest offering from the Bhatt stable. Promoted as an erotic love triangle, the film has already scored with its music - the title track is a hit. The film is about a writer played by Ali, who in search of his new book finds himself stuck in a motel in Kashmir, where he comes across a mysterious girl (Sapna) with a strange past. It's a thriller with sprinklings of supernatural. The Bhatts have had a successful track record in this genre starting with Raaz. This one follows the same formula.

Rahasya: Inspired by the sensational Aarushi Talwar murder case, Rahasya is about an 18-year-old girl who is found murdered in her own house, and her father is the prime suspect. The film has Kay Kay Menon, Ashish Vidyarthi and Tisca Chopra in key roles. It is directed by Manish Gupta who has scripted hard-hitting films like Sarkar, Company, and later directed thrillers like Hostel and The Stoneman Murders. The Talwars who are languishing in jail had filed a petition to halt the release of the film because of the similarities between their case and the story. However, the Delhi High Court rejected the petition. Manish in an earlier interview had denied any similarity saying, "There is a murder and there are a number of suspects. And there's a Hercule Poirot-like investigative officer played by K K Menon." Well, the truth will be out soon!
