In honour of Mother's Day, here's a list of five inspiring films that revolved around strong mother figures.

Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music 

One of the most iconic movie of all time, The Sound of Music is based on the real life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the most prominent concert groups before World War II. In the film, Maria (Julie Andrews)  leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to seven children of a Naval officer widower Captain Von Trapp and brings to them a new found love for life and music.

Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side

The Blind Side is based on the real life story of NFL pro Michel Oher, who went from being a homeless teenager to an American lineman after Leigh Anne Tuohy (played by Sandra Bullock) and her family take him in and eventually become his legal guardian. Oher finds himself living in a home and realises his full potential as a student and football player with their support.

Julia Roberts in Stepmom 

When fashion photographer Isabel Kelly (Julia Roberts) gets engaged to Luke Harrison (Ed Harris), not everyone is pleased.  Harrison's children from his first marriage make every effort to show their dislike for her, despite all her efforts to get closer to them. But, a tragic family crisis involving their mother Jackie (Susan Sarandon) changes everything. The Bollywood remake of this film, We Are Family, starred Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal.

Cameron Diaz  in My Sister's Keeper

Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) was conceived by means of in vitro fertilisation to be a genetic match for her older sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia. Anna is unable to live the life she wants because of her sister's dependency on her. When Anna decides to sue her parents for medical emancipation and the rights to her own body, her mother Sara Fitzgerald (Cameron Diaz) stops at nothing to get what she feels is right. 

Watch:  As a loving act Sara shaver her head, so that her ill daughter Kate doesn't feel abnormal when she leaves the house.

Jodi Foster in Flight Plan

Kyle Pratt (Jodie Foster) an airplane engineer is heading from Germany to New York on Elgin 474 to bury her husband. But a few hours into the flight, she awakens to find her daughter missing. Stranger still,  the flight crew, including Captain Rich (Sean Bean) and Air Marshal Gene Carson (Peter Sarsgaard) all claim the child was never on board. Unwilling to believe, Pratt searches every inch of the plane to find her daughter, despite what the people on board have to say.
