When Maniesh Paul was heading towards the Border Security Force Training Camp —Paloura in Jammu recently, he had no clue about all the fun that awaited him. The television anchor, host and actor was here as part of Comedy Central’s Spread The Cheer campaign. And while the entertainer had the BSF jawans in splits with his witty one-liners and banter, Maniesh, too, was left impressed not only by the faujis’ display of their intense training but even by the wealth of talent the men possess.

Display of strength

A BSF spokesperson said that the jawans had been waiting to meet the actor. “They stay away from their families, so when a civilian comes to our camp, especially celebrities like Maniesh, they welcome them with open arms,” he said. At the camp, Maniesh visited the Martyr’s Memorial to pay a tribute to the BSF jawans who heroically lost their lives in the line of duty. Later, he was taken to the grounds where the commandos gave him a glimpse of their intense training. When invited to do the rope climbing, like the jawans before him, he sportingly climbed them. On being asked about his experience, he remarked, “It’s the first time after my school that I took part in rope climbing. I had fallen and the skin had come off that time. I thought I’ll end up embarrassing myself again today, but God was kind to me,” he said with a smile. He also indulged in a game of kabbadi with the jawans, and when they ended up grabbing him, he declared, “Main toh vaise bhi aap logon ko jhappi dene aaya tha!” making them break into peals of laughter.

LOL moments

It was Maniesh’s turn to spread the cheer and what followed was a fun-filled hour with the actor and anchor getting the BSF personnel to interact and even sing and dance with him! While he got one jawan to admit that he’s a fan of Shah Rukh Khan, he got four of them to mimic Salman Khan, Dabangg style, on Pandey jee seeti, only after obtaining permission from their seniors! But while Maniesh was entertaining the troops, even they had a few aces up their sleeve. Not only did they croon beautifully to a couple of songs, they danced their hearts out as well, with one of them displaying some real mean moves to Prabhudeva’s Muqabla.

The programme came to an end with a beautiful rendition of Mera Rang De Basanti Chola by the actor himself. Time and again, he reminded everyone about the bravery and valour of the men in uniform. When he was asked if was taller than one of the BSF jawans, Maniesh responded, “Sir, mera kad jitna bhi ho, aapse ooncha kabhi nahi ho sakta!” For the actor, it was encouraging to see the men sing and dance and have a good time. “I feel happy that I have spread some smiles. They work in such difficult situations, but today, I saw them dance, sing and laugh out loud. It’s been a beautiful day and I will always cherish these memories,” he added.
