She has long been associated with the traditional Indian garment and so it’s no wonder that television actress and host Mandira Bedi chose to foray into designing with a sari collection.
While Mandira has already successfully showcased her designs at various exhibitions in Mumbai, Bengalaru and Singapore, she is ready to launch her own store tonight. “I’m both excited and very nervous. While some people loved my saris and thought I should open a store, others felt it was too soon,” says the actress who was finally coaxed by her husband Raj and friend and business partner Zahabia Abid. Every sari on offer is something that Mandira would love to wear herself. She says, “My saris are not about bling or embellishments, instead they’re a play on colours and fabrics with georgettes, chiffons and crepes prominently used. Stylewise they are traditional with a twist.” When asked if her line was inspired by Satya Paul (whose designs she often sports) or any other designer, she was quick to dismiss the question.
In terms of design, Mandira has created triangle saris, one third saris and more that can be worn for Diwali or even occasion wear. She’s also created some readymade blouses in noodle strap and halter styles in various shades of gold that can be easily paired with any of the saris. “I have purposely kept the price points low from Rs12,000 – 18,000 and just a handful above Rs20,000. I think most designer stores overprice their saris,” adds Mandira who will have Karan Johar inagurating her store.
“Karan along with Manish Malhotra styled me for the film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and so I thought as I’m taking a step into fashion there’s no better, more dapper person to launch my store.” While she has no plans as of now to open a store franchise, she does want to create an online presence soon. As for the allure of the garment, Mandira says, “I love saris — they can be worn in a conservative, super formal, sexy or even elegant manner. One day I’m going to create a YouTube video on how to drape a sari — it’s super easy!”
