Relationships have never been easy. What baffled a man about a woman thousand of years ago, still baffles him. Women have been complaining about few traits of men for ages now. The world has seen phenomenal growth in terms of development in science and technology, biology and medicine but no technology can solve the complex relationship between a man and a woman. Makrand Deshpande's latest play The Doll deals with this complex relationship between a man and a doll, err a woman. Based on the famous play by Croatian writer Miro Gavran, The Doll looks into the psyche of these two very important components of the nature.

The story of a doll

The Doll tells of Mark whose girlfriend leaves him after a seven-year relationship due to his reluctance for the marriage and child that she wants. As he couldn't bear the loneliness, after a few months he begins to live with a woman-doll, the latest android designed to make man happy. But the android was constructed by a female scientist, who gave some of her own views on male-female relationships to the doll, so that through the dramatic and humorous situations undergone by this lonely man and the doll, the audience sees the essence of wrongdoing toward women and the misunderstanding of them by today's men.

Proving a point

"Despite knowing that it is just a doll, Mark does not stops being a 'man'. The doll not only has to fulfil his needs but also boost his ego. He starts seeing it as the most compatible part of his life," says Deshpande. In living with this doll, Mark gradually becomes aware of his mistakes for which his girlfriend left him. "By living with a doll, he realises how a man should not treat a woman," says Trishla Patel, who plays the character of the doll. "Actually, the doll becomes the reason of the reality check of this man. It's only an irony that an unreal thing makes this real person realise his mistakes," adds Deshpande.

Human touch

The play is very contemporary, pinpointing the spirit of our times. Today when people are increasingly living a virtual life, The Doll makes us realise that nothing can truly replace direct human communication. "It was very difficult to act like a doll," says Patel adding that, "A doll cannot emote, it cannot express and yet I had to bring forth the challenges of complex relationship between a man and a woman."
