For 25-year-old Bass Guitarist Anmol Lomjail music is like oxygen and he needs his daily dose of it, even if it is just for a few minutes. Anmol started playing the guitar when he was 14. But for the show Life is Music, the guitarist has become a bassist.

Hailing from the Darjeeling, Anmol comes from a culture where music is everywhere. He grew up with a family of musicians; his father plays the Keyboard and Harmonium while his mother is a folk singer. He actively performed in school and grabbed any chance he got to play music. "I would jam with friends, go for gigs, play Rock n’ Roll and Metal," he says.

"Music is part of all occasions, all festivals. It’s always there," says Anmol. Ironically despite the prevalence of music and musicians it is difficult for him to carve a career in music at home. To pursue his passion further, he moved to Bombay.

Anmol finds that the music scene in Bombay is dominated by Bollywood music as compared to the north east where the scene is more diverse. In this fast-paced and competitive city, Anmol is now working towards making his mark.

What’s the music scene like in the North East?

It is different from here. Bombay (Mumbai) is dominated by Bollywood music. Musicians are doing well here. In the North East, there’s a lot of talent, lots of good musicians but not enough opportunities and platforms. Despite that though, there are a lot of good musicians in the region. Music is part of all occasions, all festivals. It’s always there.

Do they encourage students to take up music in schools?

Yes. We would perform often in school. They are happy with children doing music. A lot of the schools also teach music, offer Guitar classes etc.

What about the government? Does the local government support music and musicians?

I don’t think it does. There are no scholarship programs on offer. The government is not linked to music or musicians. We do what we do on our own. Music is supported by people everywhere, by communities, by locals.
