It’s no surprise that every time Ragini Tandan takes stage, she sings her debut single Lamberghini numerous times. “After every five songs, it has to be there,” the vocalist enthuses about her collaboration with The Doorbeen that has caught the fancy of music lovers and Bollywood celebs alike. “We didn’t think about how far the number would go when we made it but the response has been great,” she states. The songstress also talks about being confused with Harshdaa Vijay, the model who featured in the video, and other things.

STARTING EARLY

Though the single released in March 2018, it took the country by storm towards the end of the year and now, Ragini is basking in all the attention. “I love it because this is what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve been singing since I was three years old,” says the girl from Ambala, Punjab, whose parents also sing, though not professionally. “My father wanted me to become a singer; so, I learnt Hindustani Classical till I was 16,” says the crooner, who then moved to Delhi and partook in competitions and performances.

THE TRACK JUST HAPPENED

Though Ragini always wanted to become a vocalist, debuting with Lamberghini wasn’t the plan per se. The Doorbeen duo — Onkar Singh and Gautam Sharma — contacted her on social media to collaborate on it, and the rest is history. The song’s success meant floodgates of opportunities opening up for her but she wanted to complete her education before embarking on her musical journey. “When I came back from the UK, I saw so many people sharing the song on social media, dance videos and celebrities like Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt saying it’s their current-favourite track. I knew we were on to something really big,” she says excitedly. Ragini admits that many people were under the impression that the model Harshdaa also sang the number. “I’m trying to get that sorted out,” she laughs before adding, “But it’s happening slowly.”

STUFF COMING UP

Currently, Ragini has private as well as public shows in Mumbai, Delhi and Jaipur till March end. She is working on more indie music and will drop a new track soon, though she is reluctant to reveal whether it will be in Hindi or Punjabi. She also has eyes set on Bollywood. “I’d love to do playback singing, too. But, I’m open to doing whatever comes my way. I think that’s the best way to show your versatility. I’m just going with the flow and enjoying it,” she avers. Quoting Arijit Singh as his favourite voice in the film industry, Ragini says her ultimate wish is to sing for AR Rahman. “I’d love to work with everyone, actually,” she signs off.
