September 5 is Krishna Janmashtami. 

1) Yashomati Maiyya Se Bole Nandlala from Satyam Shivam Sundaram

This beautiful song by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar is a beautiful composition from the superhit film Satyam Shivam Sundaram starring Zeenat Aman and Shashi Kapoor. The song is about Lord Krishna complaining that he is dark while Radha is fair. And Lord Krishna’s mother explains beautifully why this is so.

 

2) Mach Gaya Shor from Khuddar

Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Parveen Babu, this movie is one of the best in Big B’s career. This song is picturised on Big B breaking the dahi handi and talks about the tricks that Krishna keeps pulling on Radha. It’s a favourite tune for the festival!

 

3) Bada Natkhat Hai Ye from Amar Prem


One of the classsics in Hindi films, this song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. RD Burman composed the music for the song but it was apparently changed by his father SD Burman. This is another all-time popular Yashoda and Krishna numbers during this festival.

 

4) Radha Kaise Na Jale from Lagaan

This number sung Udit Narayan and Asha Bhosle for Lagaan is also a popular number. Picturised on Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, this is a song that is beautiful and romantic. 

5) Radha On The Dance Floor from Student of the Year

A more young, trendy and hip number in recent times is this song from Student Of The Year. Most parties continue to play this song for the peppy beat and playfulness. The song has been sung by Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal.
